Tutor Me
Teachers: Josh Dresser
Class Title: Music Production
Grade level: 12th
In this project, students worked to develop a tutorial for ChiTech’s Pipe Organ. Students researched the notes, keys, and characteristics of their favorite melodies and then developed a tutorial to share with the ChiTech community.
Teacher reflection:
As a part of the team that worked on making the pipe organ last year, I wanted to be sure to provide new students with resources that could help them learn how to interact with the instrument. This project allowed new music students to familiarize themselves with the notes of the musical keyboard while analyzing the characteristics of the melodies that accompany their daily lives. One of the more challenging aspects of this project was trying to record in a highly trafficked area.

Playing an instrument for the first time is really tricky but in the end all you really need to do is just practice. Once we were in the middle of the project I realized that playing the piano wasn't hard at all. I thought it would be really hard to play but all you really have to do is just get used to putting your fingers in a position to be able to actually play. My main challenge was learning the notes, the terms (e.g leap, skip, step) and not hesitating. In the end, when I was doing my final video tutorial I realized that I had done it; I had actually learned the notes and I didn't hesitate with the note names. One thing I still struggle with is the terms. They seem simple and easy to understand but when it came down to do my video I panicked and didn’t know which was which (should have practiced a bit more).
