Mini- Project Slice
Why do we like the music we like?
An exploration into the musical preferences of our classroom community.
Essential Question: Why do we like the music we like?
Sub-questions:
1. What factors influence our musical taste?
2. How can we measure the factors that influence musical taste?
3. How can we display our predictions and conclusions in a clear and interesting way?
Summary: Everyone has a preference for the style of music or song they enjoy. How are these tastes developed? What can we observe by examining the tastes of our classroom community?
Over the next two class periods, you will collaborate with a group of your peers to analyze the musical preferences of our classroom community. You will work collaboratively to make predictions about what you will find, manipulate survey data in google docs to draw conclusions, and present your findings to the class with a small poster displaying your data.
Products:
1. Prediction about the favorite style of music of the class and a rationale for your hypothesis. (This can be completed in project journal, will be turned in after completion of project)
2. Data analysis worksheet showing the way you calculated your results.
3. Poster displaying the data in an interesting and eye-catching way.
4. Presentation of results with poster to class.
Timeline: 2 class periods
Day #1:
- Make predictions about the musical tastes of the classroom community and provide a justification of your answer.
- Analyze the data in google docs and answer the questions on the data worksheet.
- Develop a strategy to display your data in a visually appealing way while using the Data Gallery Walk posters as examples.
- Complete a rough draft of your poster on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper.
Day #2:
- Present your results to another group and get feedback about the rough draft of your poster.
- Incorporate feedback from partner group and complete a full size poster of your project.
- Present your results to the class.
- Complete reflection worksheet.
- Complete collaboration worksheet.
- In your project journal, reflect on the following questions:
o What did you learn about the musical tastes of your classmates?
o What factors that could influence musical taste did our survey fail to capture?
o What other items could we add to the survey to improve it?
Assessment: (additional stuff you need to turn in)
1. Collaboration Rubric filled out for each member
2. Project reflection worksheet and journal entries
